HELPING TOGETHER Szilvia Lubics - Brave Camp - CHERRISK

Dire conditions, extreme weather and several hundred kilometers of running – that’s what Szilvia Lubics must face during the Ultra Gobi. Hungary’s best ultramarathoner will compete on her own in the Gobi Desert, but she won’t be alone. Her supporters can share this journey with Szilvia through a special application measuring how much they walk and run together. These active minutes can be converted to donations with CherryGo to the Brave Camp (Bátor Tábor), a foundation organizing camps for seriously ill children and their families.

Szilvia Lubics is preparing for a breath-taking challenge: the ultramarathoner will compete at Ultra Gobi, a 400km non-stop, self-navigation, self-supported race. Although Lubics has finished and won several serious races before, this one is going be her hardest so far. The landscape resembles Mars, and although there are some rest stations throughout the desert, runners must carry their own food, drinks and clothes during the race. The race is expected to be finished within 4-6 days, and during this time participants can only sleep some hours because of the conditions.

“This is going to be the toughest race of my life in every sense. First, it’s going to be the longest. It’s also self-supported and self-navigated, which makes it even harder. If this wasn’t enough, this is a one stage race, which must be done in dire conditions and weather. This is going to be an enormous challenge, both physically and mentally. I really don’t know how I will react to days of solitude, sleep deprivation and extreme conditions”, said Szilvia Lubics about the race.

IT’S MORE THAN A SIMPLE RUN

“Since the race is going through a very special, Mars-like terrain, I not only expect this to be the hardest, but also the most special running experience of my life. That’s why I really wanted to share this challenge and experience with others. During the toughest hours, it will also give me great motivation to know that this isn’t only about me”, explained the ultramarathoner the reason behind the charitable campaign based on her run.

Szilvia Lubics decided that she wanted to bring attention to the cause of seriously ill children who often can’t explore the joys of nature and sport. These experiences could be life changing for them, and they can help them recover faster. That’s why the ultramarathoner and her sponsors are launching the ‘Let’s take a step together for the ill children’ (‘Lépjünk együtt a beteg gyermekekért!’)campaign to support the Brave Camp.

HELPING TOGETHER

This campaign is special in another sense, too: donations can be given without any financial commitments, just by virtually working out with Szilvia Lubics. To do that, users only have to download the CherryGO application. This app awards cherries for minutes spent moving (e.g. walking, running, cycling). These cherries can be used to purchase ‘Let’s take a step together for the ill children’ coupon which are then converted to 200 forints of donation. The more coupons the users get, the more money CHERRISK (the company behind the app) will transfer to the Brave Camp foundation.

„Ever since we launched CHERRISK, community and charity are among the most important things to us. That’s why we were especially happy to do something special with Szilvia. What’s more, with our new application, anyone can be a part of Ultra Gobi experience and we can also do something great together to make the world a little better”, said Krisztián Kurtisz, CEO of CHERRISK about working with the ultramarathoner.

“The Brave Camp is returning cancer affected and chronically ill children to their carefree childhoods. We’ve been doing this for more than 18 years, and nowadays we host 1500 campers a year. Our therapeutic recreation camps are free, supported only by donations. Campaigns like this are especially important to us for two reasons: they help us raise funds and they also bring spotlight to our cause. The power of the community, happiness and healing experiences are especially important in our work, too”, underlined Tamás Knecht, Director of Fundraising of the Brave Camp foundation.

ABOUT SZILVIA LUBICS

Ultra Gobi isn’t the first serious challenge of Szilvia Lubics. She won Ultrabalaton and Spartathlon several times. She was 3rdat the Namib Race this year. She was 4thon 4 Deserts (a series crossing the Atacama Desert) and also at Badwater Ultramarathon. Between 2011 and 2014 she was the Ultramarathoner of the Year in Hungary.

ABOUT BÁTOR TÁBOR

The Brave Camp fundation changes lives. They provide life-changing experiences, strength and tools to live and to recover for seriously ill children and their families. All of these for free. They believe that the sun always shines above the clouds.

Their camp is not a summer camp in the classical meaning of the term. They place children outside of their comfort zones through special experiences. By overcoming their fears, they recognize their readiness to confront not only the challenges involved in their adventures, but also their illness. They put smiles on their faces; they give them power for their struggle.
